
Alberto R. Piola is a Research Director at Servicio de Hidrografía Naval, Professor of Oceanography at Universidad de Buenos Aires, and Principal Scientist at Instituto Franco-Argentino sobre Estudios de Clima y sus Impactos (CONICET/CNRS), Argentina. His main research interests are to understand the physical mechanisms causing variability of water mass properties, ocean stratification and large-scale circulation, how they impact on the marine environment, and their feedbacks to the climate systems. Has authored and co-authored over 100 peered reviewed publications and book chapters on these subjects. Piola chairs the Executive Committee of the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning initiative (SAMOC), is the lead PI of the Variability of Ocean Ecosystems Around South America (VOCES) project and serves in the scientific advisory committee on marine science to Argentina´s Minister of Science and Technology. Piola is Co-Editor in Chief of Journal of Marine Systems and Review Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science.
