Dr. Anthony (Tony) Charles is a professor in the School of the Environment and the School of Business at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. He is a well-known interdisciplinary researcher on fisheries, oceans and coasts, including studies of small-scale fisheries, integrated ocean management, community-based management, climate impacts and adaptation, sustainability of fisheries and coasts, and human dimensions of ecosystem-based management and marine protected areas. Dr. Charles has authored several books, including Sustainable Fishery Systems; Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservation and Governing the Coastal Commons. He leads the Community Conservation Research Network, a global initiative that focuses on the role of local communities in environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Dr. Charles is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation and a member of the Fisheries Expert Group in IUCN’s Commission on Ecosystem Management. He has served as an advisor to organizations including the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the OECD, the World Trade Organization, and the Canadian government.
