Salvatore Aricò is Head of the Ocean Science Section at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in Paris, France, since January 2017. Salvatore has served as Executive Secretary of the UN Secretary General’s Scientific Advisory Board (2014-2017); UNESCO Senior Programme Specialist for Scientific Assessments (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, International Assessment on Agricultural Science & Technology for Development, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, from the early 2000s on); Chief of the ‘Jakarta Mandate’ on Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Unit at the Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat (1998-2001); Associate Expert at the IOC (1993-1996); and Lecturer of a European Commission project on Environmental Impact Assessment (1992). His academic roles have included Senior Researcher at the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies, Japan (2004-2010); Researcher at the University of Delaware, USA (1997); and Visiting Professor at the University Parthenope in Naples, Italy (2010-2012). In 2017 he was appointed Principal Visiting Fellow Research at the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. Salvatore holds a PhD in Marine Environment and Resources from the Stazione Zoologica ‘Anton Dohrn’ (1992). He has published 80 scientific publications (including a book with Cambridge University Press, several book chapters, and some peer-reviewed papers). His significant science and policy roles include past alternate Co-Chair of the Future Earth Governing Council (2015-2017), UNESCO focal point for the International Council for Science, ex officio member of the DIVERSITAS Science Committee, selected expert for the IPCC AR5, and member of the editorial board of Sustainability Science.
