HERNAN CHAIMOVICH
Hernan Chaimovich received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Chile in 1962. In 1968, he became a special professor of biochemistry at the UCh. In 1979, he received a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of São Paulo Institute of Chemistry (IQ-USP), where he became a tenured professor of Biochemistry in the same year. In 1980, he became an adjunct professor of Biochemistry at the IQ-USP. In 1984, he became a full professor of Biochemistry and, in 2015, professor emeritus at the IQ-USP.
Dr. Chaimovich was president of the Brazilian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1994–1995); head of the Biochemistry Department of the IQ-USP (1985–1989 and 1994–1996); coordinator of the USP Molecular Sciences Department (1990–1994); the USP Dean for Research (1997–2001); director of the IQ-USP (2002–2006); and president of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (2015 -2016).
He was vice-president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2007-2017), vice-president of the International Council for Science (ICSU) (2005-2008) and president of the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) (2004 - 2010).
His principal line of research is the effect of interfaces on chemical and biological reactivity.
